Burghill, St Mary the Virgin

The Burghill Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin [1] easy enough to find in the old part of the village. There is a narrow lane that heads North along the Eastern boundary of the churchyard and some parking is available on this lane just as it widens out, be careful to avoid the spot reserved for the organist! There is a lovely, well maintained churchyard with a number of benches.

I visited for the first time on Sunday 19th April 2009 for a practical session during the Hereford Ringing Course. You do not enter the main body of the church to access the ringing room. There is a door in the West side of the tower that provides access to a wrought iron spiral staircase that leads up to the ringing room. The room is not large but provides plenty of room to ring and the 8 bells were nice to ring. I was here to practice Bob Minor and rang several courses on bell #3 which proved to be an easy bell to ring.

The Bells

The tower has a ring of 8 bells with a tenor weighing 10-0-20 in G. Dove's Guide includes details of the bells at St Mary.

The Hereford Diocesan Guild of bellringers also have information on the Burghill Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin. No information on the bells history or inscriptions was to be found.

Note: For anyone organising a trip here, there is a toilet.
